There was a tree.

There was...probably supposed to be a tree, yes. Lili knew this, because she knew how this holiday went. She had always admired the trees, with their beautiful lights and decorations, so delicate and elegant. The problem here was that...well, this was just a tree.

There were no ornaments to be found on it.

No tinsel.

No lights.

It was ridiculous, and even more ridiculous was the thought that she should be the one to decorate it. That was work for the servants! That was what they were...paid to do, she was certain!

But claiming it would be a good bonding hobby with her fiance (ugh, what an ugly word), her attendants had left her with sneaky smiles and giggles and she'd been left with boxes of what she assumed were decorations and... with Leon.

He looked even less pleased than she felt, if that was even possible (she was not sure it was, but he made a valiant effort). His arms were crossed, and his foot tapped the ground as he stared at the tree, expression melded into a scowl. He looked none-too-ready to help, either, which... well, that meant Lili was left to do it all on her own.

Because of course she was going to.

Even if she still didn't really think it was her chore to do, she...well, she loved the lights. She loved the decorations. She loved the glimmer and the beauty of it, and the way the decorations and colors interweaved to make everything so beautiful. She loved it, and if she had to recreate it herself to get it, she would.

First step was... opening a box, of course. She picked one at random, wrestling with the tape--but the noise seemed to be enough to catch Leon's attention, and he arched an eyebrow at her.

"What are you doing?"

That was an obvious answer, she rather thought, which is why she was snippy in response. "What does it look like? Surely your eyes still work?"

Leon looked incredibly unimpressed, which meant that Lili had to add, a little flustered, "I am going to decorate the tree so this task is finished!"

The boy (she really hesitated to call him a man) looked sincerely unconvinced, but all he said was, "Suit yourself. Do what you want."

Lili grumbled under her breath as she wrestled with the tape more. "I don't need your permission to do what I had already intended to do!"

The tape, it seemed, was a worthy foe, however. Getting it off the box was... not working. After a few more moments of little to no progress, she settled back for a moment as if to regroup--but she didn't get the chance. Leon had strode over in that time, unsheathing his dagger in a quick movement (she squeaked at the sight of light reflecting off of a blade, though she would deny it later), and quickly taking care of the tape on the box.

Lili stared at him.

He looked up and met her eyes, and quickly looked away, clearing his throat.

"You were wasting both of our times with that pitiful display. Just take your box and decorate your tree. I will handle the other boxes."

Lili was so surprised by his willingness to help that she didn't even take issue with him almost ordering her around; instead she took the box of ornaments and got to work.

Admittedly, it took much longer than it should have, and the ornaments were lopsided. The tree in general was not exactly...colorful in the right way (more in the eyesearing way) as much as Lili had tried. The tinsel was hanging off of the tree awkwardly in some places, and one of the ornaments had cracked when she dropped it, though she'd just shoved it back on the tree and hoped nobody would notice.

Nonetheless, it was... almost done. So when she grabbed the star to put it on the top, haphazardly stacking boxes to make it high enough to do so, she was feeling quite satisfied with herself. She plunked the star onto the top of the tree, pleased, and moved to get back down when the tower of makeshift boxes shifted--and before she could even think to scream, she was falling.

She winced, preparing herself for an impact that never came. The feeling of being caught, however, was far more familiar at this point (especially in these arms, as awful as that thought was, but then, that had been how they'd met), and she opened one eye to see Leon looking down at her with an unreadable expression.

He'd caught her, though.

He'd wanted nothing to do with the decorating, and he hadn't even been involved--she hadn't had the time to call out to him, or ask for his help.

And he'd caught her anyway.

Later, it would be something Lili would think on, and ponder, and try to understand.

But for now, she made a face and scrambled to get back on the ground, brushing herself off quickly and clearing her throat, and Leon's face shifted to a much more familiar expression of exasperation and at least this was far more familiar ground, because she wasn't sure what that moment had been.

Maybe in the end, she didn't want to know.

(But she rather suspected that she did.)
