The night started with Tenka almost eating shit.
Sousei frowned as he carefully stepped over the chain that managed to cause his boyfriend so much trouble. “Are you alright?”
Maybe on a more normal day, he would’ve been quicker to mock or be derisive. But considering that this was one of his ‘not so good days’ as Tenka called them, he instead reached for Tenka’s hand to steady him once he was close enough. He needed Tenka and that involved Tenka not being injured, even from his own stupidity.
But Tenka juts snorted as he looked back to Sousei, having found his equilibrium again and he leaned over to press a kiss to his scarred cheek.
They were also wearing hoodies – under Tenka’s suggestion, it made the whole kissing thing a little harder since Tenka had to dodge a little bit of cloth to get to his boyfriend’s cheek.
Sousei relaxed a fraction at that though, and even more still when Tenka squeezed his hand reassuringly. Alright then. They were fine.
“Don’t worry about me,” Tenka answered belatedly with a grin as he pulled back and lightly tugged on Sousei’s hand, even as he laced their fingers together. A slight incline started as Sousei still wondered exactly where they were headed off to. Upon realizing that Sousei was tense, Tenka’s answer was just to stand up, gather some hoodies, toss some items in a backpack, and insist that they should go out that night.
So Sousei merely quietly assented, a soft noise emanating from his throat as he trailed after. (Though of course he would worry about Tenka, Tenka was one of the few people that he would always worry about.)
“You’re not too cold, are you?” Tenka asked, looking over his shoulder briefly before realizing that’d be a quick way to fall again and that Sousei falling right now would probably not lead to good things.
That much manages to get Sousei to shake his head though, even as his free hand wrapped into the cloth of the borrowed hoodie. “It’s fine for now.”
Which earned him another one of Tenka’s bright smiles and Sousei exhaled faintly. This was…. easier.
It didn’t take them that much longer to get to the top though, not even a hundred feet from the chain, and the trail ended in a clearing.
Sousei blinked upon realizing, actually walking a few steps past Tenka to properly take in what he was seeing.
A string of lights across the horizon, dotting the sky with their sparks and illuminating the sky from below. True, it made it difficult to see the stars, but when it seemed like the stars had fallen to the earth and were burning from the ground, it was harder to mind. Some lights flickered, others turned off just as others turned on, and dashes of color would switch off in turns.
It felt so…. small, laid out right in front of him.
The sound of footsteps pulled him out of his reverie and Tenka was careful as he wrapped one arm around Sousei’s waist from behind, having read the relaxing line of Sousei’s shoulders and tentatively wondering if this would be alright.
Affirming his suspicions, Sousei let out a breath he didn’t know he was holding and sank back against his partner’s warmth.
There was a slight chill.
“Good?” Tenka murmured against Sousei’s ear as he rested his chin on his shoulder, both arms wrapping around Sousei’s waist just a fraction tighter.
The knots in his stomach had since been replaced with a warmth and Sousei…. sighed. Sighed and nodded before he turned in Tenka’s arms, coming face to face with his boyfriend’s curious smile.
Offering a small ghost of a smile of his own, Sousei reached up to pull Tenka’s hoodie aside so he could press their lips together instead.
The crushing, overwhelming feeling of anxiety had turned into something small in hindsight.
This small, finite moment shared in the privacy of the two of them felt like it meant the whole world.
Pulling back, Sousei nodded once. “Good.”
